New Fiction 2022 - December
The Chimes at Midnight by Geoff Trowbridge (2008)
It takes its time to get to the meat until there’s more to chew on in the latter half. Most of these TOS alternate histories were mildly interesting but this one is a cut above.
A Gutted World by Keith R.A. DeCandido (2008)
"What if the Cardassians discovered the Bajoran Wormhole?" This is the question that got me reading all these Myriad Universes novellas in the first place, but because I’m me and a completionist, I couldn’t just skip past the others in the series to get here. I come to Star Trek expanded universe stuff with a DS9 first approach so I was keen to read how the author spun out this alternate history in which the Dominion gets their foothold in the alpha quadrant if they met the Cardassians first. It had a little too much TNG cast for my taste (especially since those characters dominate so many of these stories), but it’s a worthy DS9 tale.
Brave New World by Chris Roberson (2008)
Now we get to a whole lot of Data, so more of TNG. The courtroom stuff doesn’t hit the same way in these stories as it does in the TV episodes, and then all the implications of androids woven into the fabric of the galaxy is strangely not that compelling.
The Embrace of Cold Architects by David R. George III (2010)
Another Data-heavy story. I think these novellas introduce interesting directions with how the Federation will absolutely exploit artificial beings if they have the slightest excuse, but this particular one needed to be its own novel. It ends just as things get interesting.
The Tears of Eridanus by Steve Mollmann & Michael Schuster (2010)
A TOS story that deviates from the prime universe thousands of years before the era we know. It revels in an alternate history in which the Andorians made first contact with Earth, and the Vulcans and Romulans never parted ways.
The Last Generation by Andrew Steven Harris, Gordon Purcell, Bob Almond, Terry Pallot, Mario Boon, John Hunt, Robbie Robbins, Chris Mowry, Neil Uyetake, Andy Schmidt, Scott Dunbier, Justin Eisinger, Mariah Huehner, Bill Tortolini (2009)
I could’ve done without Data and the TNG cast at the center of things (again), but it’s cool to see Sulu flying around being a badass in his Excelsior ship. All these TNG tales feels like the higher-ups asking “Ey, where’s my TNG (money)? I gotta have my TNG (money)!”
Strange World dir. Don Hall (2022)
I loved it, but then I’m a sucker for perilous adventure tales across strange new lands.
Violent Night dir. Tommy Wirkola (2022)
Die Hard meets Home Alone with a blend of Bad Santa and maybe God of War?
Empire of Light dir. Sam Mendes (2022)
I was there for it all the way. Sometimes I remember I’m a normie-ass man but that part that feels like I’m a distant weirdo never goes away, and this movie’s for that guy.
Demon Wind dir. Charles Philip Moore (1990)
I watched this movie within a video game along with its MST3K-style commentary at 2 AM with my youngest brother and what a thing to do and write down.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio dir. Guillermo del Toro (2022)
I mean, of course it’s great. I haven’t read the original story and it sounds like this hews closer to that than the popular perception from Disney’s takes.
Babylon dir. Damien Chazelle (2022)
This could've been dry but instead it’s constantly running at full charge, and even when we slow down to the granular level of filmmaking commentary it’s still a high pressure romp.
Jack and Jill dir. Dennis Dugan (2011)
Eh, I suppose the most impressive thing here is that Sandler sells the idea that’s he's own twin sister to the point that you consider them separate people.
The Whale dir. Darren Aronofsky (2022)
This had the potential to be bleak but instead it’s just genuinely hopeful. The performances come across a little too staged, as does the whole movie I suppose, so it’s no surprise to learn than this was originally a stage play.
The Outer Limits - "The Sandkings" (1995)
Here we go! I’d been thinking about watching the entire 1995 reboot of The Outer Limits and it’s everything I could’ve hoped for. All the 90s actors I remember from Saturday afternoon sci-fi TV, dated effects and production techniques, stories about man’s reach exceeding his grasp. This first episode even features three generations of the Bridges acting clan. The thing about intelligent alien bugs isn’t so compelling, but the overall production makes up for it.
The Outer Limits - "Vanishing Act" (1996)
I was looking for an episode that features New Year’s Day and found this story about a man who time jumps forward by ten years every time he falls asleep. It’s a sci-fi sort of twist on It’s a Wonderful Life and very reminiscent of something you’d see on Star Trek.
Tales from the Crypt - "And All Through the House" (1989)
And since I plan to also watch Tales from the Crypt after TOL, I skipped over to this story about a bad Santa stalking a bad mom.
The Outer Limits - "Valerie 23" (1995)
Here’s a reminder not to fuck around with robots. Don’t do it! Especially not if they’re hot! There’ll more fucked up robot tales in the seasons ahead...
The Outer Limits - "Blood Brothers" (1995)
We get a few stories here about rich assholes trying to live forever. This one does also present an interesting idea: what if we could all be cured of all ailments and live twice as long in the process? What happens when no one’s dying and the population count explodes? In any case, that’s more thought than what goes into the episode’s story. It’s mostly about a rich guy jumping the gun on proper medical testing and getting screwed as he should.
The Outer Limits - "The Second Soul" (1995)
Oh man, I was definitely on the paranoid side of this story as the events unfold. It was nice to get one of these where it isn’t a bleak or worst case ending.
The Outer Limits - "White Light Fever" (1995)
Another rich asshole who literally wants to live forever. And that’s it. Spoiler: he doesn’t get to.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared - Series 2 (2022)
I wanna love this because I loved the original web series, but binging a bunch of TV-length episodes just felt like too much of it. I liked them when they were shorter and spaced out more. Binger beware, I know.

“A damn good main event, pretty good main card, all downhill afterwards” UFC on ESPN 3 Preview
Joey
June 23rd, 2019
To this point, the UFC ESPN cards have been pretty easy to decipher. They're entirely based upon really good main events with people you know bolstered by main cards filled with good fights with people you'd know and then not really much else on the prelim slate. This card is a prime example of that sort of fight building; a tremendous main event in JDS vs Ngannou (or Woodley vs Lawler), a main card with good fighters in good fights and then? Well not much. It's a pretty barren prelim slate hurt by a few drop outs but it's not going to be remembered. It's a solid fight card that probably could've used more big fight as opposed to one more GOOD fight but what are ya gonna do. If the worst fight on the main card is an action fight between Polo Reyes and Drew Dober? You're probably okay.
Fights: 13
Debuts: Journey Newson, Vince Murdock, Dalcha Lungiambula
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 4 (Tyrone Woodley vs Robbie Lawler CANCELLED/ Sergio Pettis OUT, Journey Newson IN vs Ricardo Ramos/Chas Skelly OUT, Vince Murdock IN vs Jordan Griffin/Roman Dolidze OUT, Eryk Anders IN vs Vinicius Moreira)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 5 (Junior Dos Santos, Francis Ngannou, Joe Benavidez, Demian Maia, Eryk Anders)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC: 4 (Eryk Anderson, Jared Gordon, Junior Albini, Dan Moret)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 8 (Francis Ngannou, Junior Dos Santos, Joe Benavidez, Jussier Formiga, Anthony Rocco Martin, Roosevelt Roberts, Maurice Green, Emily Whitmire)
Main Card Record Since Jan 1st 2017 (in the UFC): 33-16
Junior Dos Santos- 3-1 Francis Ngannou- 4-2 Jussier Formiga- 4-1 Joe Benavidez- 2-1 Demian Maia- 2-3 Anthony Rocco Martin- 6-1 Vinc Pichel- 2-1 Roosevelt Roberts- 2-0 Drew Dober- 3-1 Polo Reyes- 1-2 Paul Craig- 3-2 Alonzo Menifield- 1-0
Fights By Weight Class (yearly number here):
Light Heavyweight- 3 (25) Lightweight-  3 (42) Heavyweight- 2 (18) Women’s Strawweight- 1 (17) Flyweight- 1 (8) Welterweight- 1 (35) Bantamweight-  1 (31) Featherweight- 1 (29)
Middleweight-  (20) Women’s Flyweight-  (18) Women’s Bantamweight- (8) Women’s Featherweight- (6)
2019 Number Tracker
Debuting Fighters (15-37)- Journey Newson, Vince Murdock, Dalcha Lungiambula, Amanda Ribas
Short Notice Fighters (15-21)- Journey Newson, Vince Murdock, Eryk Anders
Second Fight (37-11)- Alonzo Menifield, Jordan Griffin, Vinicius Moreira
Cage Corrosion (Fighters who have not fought within a year of the date of the fight) (12-23)-
Undefeated Fighters (23-25)- Roosevelt Roberts, Alonzo Menifield
Fighters with at least four fights in the UFC with 0 wins over competition still in the organization (8-8)- Justin Ledet, Jared Gordon
Weight Class Jumpers (Fighters competing outside of the weight class of their last fight even if they’re returning BACK to their “normal weight class”) (17-13)- Amanda Ribas
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- So is Ngannou vs Dos Santos a #1 contender fight? Stipe Miocic has beaten both guys without much trouble but if DC beats Stipe again, he might just up and retire? I'd assume JDS vs Cormier could be a fight people would be pretty into. Who else could be the #1 contender?
2- One of the more interesting parts of 2018 was the complete evaporation of NGannou's stock, in no small part due to the UFC basically throwing the Lewis vs Ngannou fight disaster entirely at his feet. We didn't just hear about how Ngannou had a bad fight but also how he had basically been an asshole to everybody over the course of a year (a not so hidden factor brought up by fighters who had run ins with him). From here Ngannou had to deal with the UFC backlash as well as his own mental block. He KO'd Curtis Blaydes in what could best be described as a hidden main event (it headlined a Chinese card during the deadest part of the schedule) and then he kicked off 2019 by smelting Cain Velasquez in the first ever official official ESPN card.  Now he could beat his second straight UFC champ in a row and potentially set himself up for a title fight. MMA is truly a weird sport with ever changing by the minute narratives.
3- If this is it for Demian Maia, what is his MMA legacy? Two time title contender, at times top 5 in two different weight classes, career renaissance in his late 30s and one of the best back takers ever. He's got a world class resume at two weight classes (Jake Shields, Anderson Silva, Nate Marquardt, Chael Sonnen, Usman, Covington, Woodley, Condit and so on so forth) with more big wins than losses. At the same time he's been apart of some of MMA's worst fights ever, went 0-2 in title fights and will probably not be remembered fondly outside of Brazil. Is Maia the Brazilian Urijah Faber?
4- If it's true that there's been some preliminary talks about Yan vs Sterling as a potential interim title fight, does that mean Henry Cejudo's facing the winner of Benavidez vs Formiga FOR SURE in December or January?
5- The Dana White Contenders Series has been a point of contention recently but I think a dude like Alonzo Menifield is why the show has its strengths. The UFC made Menifield fight twice; once vs UFC vet Daniel Jolly and then again against LFA vet Dashawn Boatright. He won both fights, they signed him and he just finished Vinicius Moreira in his UFC debut in January. Now, because they can't help themselves, he's getting a super tough fight against Paul Craig on a UFC main card. If the UFC has been able to do one thing with the Contenders Series, it's use it to help fill gaps at 205 lbs specifically with folks like Karl Roberson, Ryan Spann, Johnny Walker and the aforementioned Menifield.
6- Speaking of Contenders Series stuff, Roosevelt Roberts looks like he could in theory become a player at 155 lbs. Roberts debuted by subbing Darrell Horcher and then followed that up with a win over Thomas Gifford. Roberts is super composed, can strike a good bit, wrestle a good bit and seems like somebody who can stick around in a really tough weight class. He's fought a lot of veterans but not a lot of quality top level competition and that changes with spoiler Vinc Pichel. He hasn't had that sort of grueling back and forth fight and Pichel figures to bring that at the very least.
7- I know Drew Dober's carving out a nice niche as an action fighter but if he does anything BUT shoot for takedowns vs Marco Polo Reyes, I'm going to be floored.
8- Jordan Griffin in his second fight is worth watching. Griffin gave Dan Ige (he of a four fight winning streak), a pretty tough challenging fight in December. He's sort of not the UFC prototype from the Contenders Series (Dana tends to sign young raw athletic guys, Griffin is pushing 30 and with over 25 fights in his career) but showcased enough vs Ige that I'm excited to see his next fight. It's just a shame it's a filler opponent signed on two weeks notice and not Chas Skelly.
9- I know it's short notice and a bad opponent and etc etc etc etc but there's NO REASON for Eryk Anders to be fighting this soon after Khalil Rountree basically played King Of The Congo on his head for three rounds. Way too soon.
10- EFC hasn't had the best conversion rate in terms of producing successful UFC quality fighters but this is 205 lbs and so Dalcha Lungiambula is at least worth a cursory glance.
11- Anybody else surprised they've kept Junior Albini around after three straight losses? Albini opens up the show vs kinda surprising HW hit Mo Greene.
12- After a two year suspension before she even had her first fight, it's going to be interesting to see what happens with Amanda Ribas in her UFC debut. She doesn't have an easy touch with kinda under the radar Emily Whitmire.

Song Review: Robbie Robertson feat. Van Morrison - “I Hear You Paint Houses”
A bit of wah-wah, a funky backbeat, Robbie Roberson’s childlike rasp and Van Morrison’s grown-up croon make murder-for-hire palatable on “I Hear You Paint Houses.”
“‘Painting houses’ refers to the splattering of blood,” Robertson told Rolling Stone.
“I said (to Morrison), ‘Hey, you want to sing on a song about splattering blood and a guy who kills people?’ But he liked that.”
The resulting first single from Robertson’s Sinephile, which arrives Sept. 20, is a remarkable mix of incongruity - via the light music and the dark subject matter and between Robertson’s coarse and Morrison’s smooth vocal cords - that is at first jarring but quickly reveals itself to be a late-career masterpiece for the former Band leader and his longtime friend.
I hear you paint houses/you’re a gun for hire. ... I’ve got a bullet with your name on it/and I’ve got a job to do/the results ain’t too pretty/putting cement in your shoes, they sing in their respective characters’ voices.
Glen Hansard, Citizen Cope, Derek Trucks and Jim Keltner are among the other guests slated to appear on Robertson’s first new LP since 2011’s How to Become Clairvoyant. They’ve got their own big jobs to do in trying to follow and match the macabre mastery of “I Hear You Paint Houses.”

The murder of Rhonda Hinson
Tumblr media
Left is Rhonda Hinson in elementary school and right is a photo taken during her senior year at East Burke High  School. Photos courtesy of the Hinson family.
(Editor’s Note:  The 1980’s was a violent decade for women in Wilkes and surrounding counties.  At least four young women were murdered between 1981and 1987—their cases remain unresolved:  Rhonda Hinson of Burke County — who has relatives in Wilkes County, Angela Hamby of Wilkes, who disappeared in 1982,  Sherry Hart of Ashe County, and Candy Roberson of Wilkes. This series, “The Killing of Rhonda Hinson” is the second in a trilogy of murder cases that will be detailed in The Record over the ensuing weeks and months — cold cases of crimes perpetrated against women over 30-years ago, whose families await justice and closure.)
    By LARRY J. GRIFFIN
Special Investigative Reporter for The Record
I closed my eyes for one second, and you were gone.  Now, my heart aches, my eyes leak, my soul mourns, and my family is broken. Only a moment that changed forever….You can be sure you will live in my heart forever…I miss the me I was when you were here… –A Facebook meme posted by Judy Hinson
Bobby Hinson remembers his daughter’s prediction.
“Rhonda told me that it was going to snow on Christmas Day,” he said. “We were always betting on when it was going to snow, and she told me that it would be on Christmas that year.”
Already there had been some moderate, late December snowfall in the Burke County Foothills; so, there was more than just a slight chance that Christmas, 1981, would be white.
“…And sure enough—as we were walking out of the house to go to church that morning, large white snowflakes started falling,” Bobby recalled, as he gazed into the middle distance.
It was Friday, December 25th.  As dads and moms and children gathered around Christmas trees bedecked with garland and twinkling lights to open treasure troves of colorful gifts, one family of three—undergirded by relatives and friends—quietly buried Rhonda Hinson.
Rhonda Annette Hinson was born 12 days before Christmas in 1962—Thursday, December 13th—the first child and only daughter of Judy and Bobby Hinson. “It was 2 p.m.,” Mother Judy remembered.  Their baby girl was healthy; however, the final days of pregnancy, leading up to the birth, were not without issues.
“We were living in Great Falls, S.C., at the time—in Chester County.  But before Rhonda was born, my doctor discovered that she was going to be a breech birth with her legs tucked against her little chest.  So, he sent me to the hospital in Rock Hill, in York County, because they had more experience with breech births.”
Fortuitously, the attending physician succeeded in turning her infant daughter, and Judy was able to give birth, without resorting to a “C-Section” delivery.
“Rhonda did undergo therapy for the first year to make sure her legs would grow in the correct position—the sessions were successful,” recounted Ms. Hinson.  “I once told my daughter about the problem with her legs being tucked against her chest. I don’t think that she ever forgot that story, which could account for her excelling in sports so she could use those legs. I mean, she played tennis, basketball, ran track, danced, twirled baton, and always marched in Charlotte’s Thanksgiving Carousel Parade.”
Judy freely admitted that she was a typical, doting first-time mother who held her newborn all the time.  “I didn’t realize that it was OK to lay her down and to let her cry a little.  So, I kept her wrapped you and held her all day long.”
Once while cuddling her neonate, the young mother drifted off to sleep.  “I was worn out and fell asleep.  And when I woke up, I was in a panic—Rhonda was not in my arms.  I looked down at my feet; there she lay--sleeping away on the floor.  She must have rolled off my lap onto the floor, but was so wrapped up that the tumble didn’t hurt her.”
When their daughter was 3-months old, the Hinsons decided to move northward to North Carolina where Judy’s brother was living.  Bobby took a job at Waldensian Bakeries in the hamlet of Valdese—one that he would hold for the duration of his working-life.  The young family of three moved into a gray block house located on a backstreet, adjacent to both the elementary and high schools, in the tiny town of Drexel, about three miles away from the bakery at which Mr. Hinson was employed.
Eventually, they moved into Valdese proper and welcomed an addition to the family.  Robert Hinson Jr., “Robbie,” was born on Saturday, Jan. 27, 1968 at Valdese General Hospital—the Hinsons’ last child and only son.  Across time, a close bond developed between a baby brother and his older sister.
When Rhonda was 6 years old, she was enrolled in Valdese Elementary School; the Hinsons lived nearby.  Initially, the school experience did not seem to agree with the budding academician.
“About everyday at lunchtime, I would see Rhonda walking from the school toward the house.  And every time, she came in complaining of a ‘terrible headache,’” Judy laughingly recalled.  “The school day was much too long for her, I guess; she could only tolerate about a half-day.”
Circa 1972, the Hinson Family moved a few miles east of Valdese toward the village of Rutherford College.  “We lived in a trailer park there for a while—but not for very long.” Judy recounted. An incident occurred that left an indelible impact upon their 13-year-old daughter and could conceivably account for her lifelong obsession with safety.
“Bobby had to be at work at 2 o’clock in the morning. Not long after he left, we were in bed when I heard someone yelling and beating on the door.  I got Rhonda and Robbie out of their beds and brought them into my bedroom just before someone knocked the door open and walked inside. We went out the back door to a neighbor’s house and called the police.”
When law enforcement arrived, they discovered a drunken intruder who was visiting from out-of-town and thought that he was breaking into the trailer at which he was staying.  Though no harm came to the mother and her children, neither Rhonda nor Robbie wanted to return to the trailer.
“They were frightened and didn’t feel at all safe anymore,” Ms. Hinson averred.  “So, we had to locate another place to live—and fast….We took about the first place that we could find available at the time—a house on Hillcrest  Street. which we live in now.”
Even before she started school, Rhonda Hinson demonstrated a penchant for being in the limelight.  When she was 5 years of age, she was among the cast of the 1968 inaugural production of the Burke County outdoor drama, From This Day Forward—a history play, written by Fred Cranford, chronicling the story of the arrival of the Waldensians who settled in the Valdese area.
(Ironically, this writer was among the original cast of that production staged in August, 1968.  I recall that a number of children of sundry ages were involved in the play and rehearsed dance sequences regularly in the Valdese High School gymnasium, adjacent to the outdoor stage.  Little did I realize at the time that among the children, with whom I frequently interacted, was 5-year-old Rhonda Hinson.)
“She was in the outdoor play for three-years. Her daddy went with her to every rehearsal and every performance.  And throughout elementary school she also danced and twirled baton—she was always doing something.  Rhonda loved being in the limelight,” her mother recollected.
While attending Valdese Junior High School, Rhonda was a solid, consistent student who continued to excel in extra-curricular activities, among which were basketball and the junior varsity band.  She played the clarinet and continued to do so when she matriculated at East Burke High  School in 1978.
Ask anyone who knew her and the story is the same—everyone liked Rhonda Hinson.
“Rhonda was well-liked by everyone,” remembered Sarah McBrayer, who lived across the street from the Hinsons and attended East Burke High  School with their daughter.  “She made friends easily; she didn’t carry grudges; she smiled and laughed and was always in an upbeat mood.”
“There was absolutely no way that she had any enemies--anywhere,” said her closest lifelong friend, Jill Turner-Mull.  “We moved here from South Carolina in 1973—I was in the fourth grade and Rhonda Hinson was my best friend even back then—in fact we became instant best friends, and she loved for me to brush her hair…The two of us might as well been sisters.”
Jill’s mother, Revonda Turner agreed, “They were together all the time.  Rhonda spent a lot of time at our house just as Jill spent time at the Hinsons’.”
Jackie Griffin Berry, who shared homeroom and several classes with Rhonda, remarked, “…she was quiet…had lots of friends, and liked to play sports.”
In fact, she excelled in sports, earning accolades in basketball, track, tennis—even varsity band.  Jill Turner-Mull recalled her best friend’s sports prowess.  “While I cheered all three years in Junior High School—grades seven through nine—Rhonda played basketball.  However, during our sophomore year in High School, we did run track together. Though Rhonda was noted for her [general] athletic ability, tennis was her passion.”
Like most teenage girls, Rhonda dated during her formative high school years.  “She dated a couple guys, one of whom was Don Gilbert,” Mother Judy recalled.  He was such a nice young man; I liked him a lot. I remember being angry with Rhonda when she stopped dating him.”
Jill Turner-Mull recalled Gilbert as well. “Yes, Don was a very nice guy, and he really liked Rhonda.  But I don’t remember her dating anyone steady.”
But that was about to change.
During her junior year, a quiet, rather studious young athlete named Greg McDowell caught Rhonda’s eye, and a romantic relationship began to develop between them.
Rhonda Hinson had slightly longer than 24-months to live.

“Figures a Cowboy’s last stand might happen in Texas” The UFC Fight Night From Austin Preview
Joey
February 12th
The downside of the UFC's hectic, frenetic fight a week schedule is that sometimes really good free cards blend in with the schedule. Even with name value, the volume tends to smoosh everything into a fine paste and this card in Austin, Texas carries that sort of feeling to it. The UFC always tries to make these Texas cards special and this one is no exception as a very  intriguing main card with plenty of stories to digest is headlined by two important fights. The headliner is Donald Cerrone in the midst of his first career losing streak vs Hawaii's Yancy Medeiros in the midst of a career changing three fight winning streak all by finish. The crazy durable Hawaiian has been a different guy since his move up to 170 lbs, showcasing his trademark toughness with increased cardio and fight stopping power. This is the perfect sort of fight where a fighter on a skid gets a step back in competition while we also get to test how "real" another fighter is. The main event pits two HWs who had their winning streaks snapped in the face of a step up in competition; Marcin Tybura (who lost to Werdum) and Derrick Lewis (who lost to Mark Hunt) duking it out. Throw in a really compelling 155 lb fight between James Vick and Francisco Trinaldo plus the return of favorites like Super Sage (!) and Thiago Alves and there's something for everybody here. IF this card still had Livia Souza vs Jessica Aguilar on it, I'd say I couldn't imagine a free fight night topping it for depth and action fight potential. The prelims are headlined by a 155 lb fight pitting Carlos Diego Fierrera vs Jared Gordon in a genuine test of what Gordon may truly have to offer but the preliminary slate is mostly here to have action fights with Stephen Peterson vs Brandon Davis figuring to be an early candidate for FOTN plus an intriguing battle between the law office of (Joby) Sanchez and (Roberto) Sanchez at flyweight.
Fights: 13 (12?)
Debuts: 5 (Curtis Millender, Stephen Peterson, Geoffrey NEal, Joby Sanchez, Tim Williams)
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 4 (Humberto Bandenay OUT, Brandon Davis IN vs Stephen Peterson/Ray Borg vs Brandon Moreno CANCELLED due to injury to Moreno/Marion Reneau vs Tanya Evinger CANCELLED due to injury to Evinger/Livia Souza OUT vs Jessica Aguilar)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 5 (Marcin Tybura, Derrick Lewis, Donald Cerrone, Thiago Alves, Sage Northcutt)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC:  4 (Donald Cerrone, Jessica Aguilar, Brian Cammozzi and Josh Burkman)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC: 3 (Yancy Medeiros, James Vick, Jared Gordon)
Main Card Record Since Jan 1st 2016 (in the UFC): 28-16 Donald Cerrone- 4-3 Yancy Medeiros- 3-1 Derrick Lewis- 6-1 Marcin Tybura- 3-2 James Vick- 4-1 Francisco Trinaldo- 4-1 Thiago Alves- 1-1 Curtis Millender- 0-0 Jessica Aguilar- 0-1 Sage Northcutt- 2-2 Thibault Gouti- 1-3
Too High Up- Brian Camozzi vs Geoffrey Neal
Everything that should be on the main card is on the main card so this isn't about that. Camozzi vs Neal is not a bad fight by any stretch of the imagination but it's essentially a showcase fight. Chris Camozzi's lil bro is 0-2 in the UFC and he's been finished both times. Geoffrey Neal is a Dana White Tuesday Night Contender Series dude (who I admittedly forgot about which shows the imprint he left on me I guess) who got his contract because he had fought twice in two weeks and showed up on three days notice to KO Chase Waldon. He has the ability to fight between 170 and 185 lbs and he's a Texas native. I'm fine with this being on the FS1 prelims but in a perfect world, this is on Fight Pass.
Too Low- Sarah Moras vs Lucie Pudilova
In a division where Rocky Pennington can earn a title shot, everybody who has NOT already fought Amanda Nunes is fair game. That means that Lucie Pudilova and Sarah Moras deserve a little more attention. They're opening up the preliminary slate on FS1 which is fine but if they don't find somebody for Jessica Aguilar then this fight more than any other fight deserves to get the step up to the main card. Moras is a pretty popular fighter while Pudilova IMO should be 2-0 in the UFC.
Stat Monitor for 2018: Debuting Fighters (Current number: 1-4):  Curtis Millender, Stephen Peterson, Geoffrey NEal, Joby Sanchez, Tim Williams
Short Notice Fighters (Current number: 2-2): Brandon Davis, ?
Second Fight (Current number: 3-9): Brandon Davis, Roberto Sanchez, Oskar Piechota
Cage Corrosion (Current number: 4-5):  Carlos Diego Ferreira
Undefeated Fighters (Current number: 4-8): Oskar Piechota
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- A lot of people laughed with the total of lack of American flag on Yancy Medeiros but let's.....well let's gingerly try to walk through this. For starters, the UFC has had a tendency to try and market Hawaiians almost as if they're not Americans. It's not anywhere near as bad as the "Samoans have thick skulls and eat raw meat" levels you saw in old school territory wrestling but one really only has to look at how BJ Penn has been marketed to understand that Hawaii is unique to any other United States fight market. Outside of the way they talk about New York fighters, Hawaiians really are their own denomination. You never hear them market dudes as "a proud Missourian" or a dude embodying the fighting spirit of Oregon or whatever. Hawaiian fighters like BJ Penn and Max Holloway are always depicted with Hawaiian flags in UFC promotional materials. Hawaii might as well be its own continent in UFC parlance. It MAY as well be American Brasilia at this point. LASTLY there is NO doubt that if the average UFC fan was presented with Yancy Medeiros and Donald Cerrone, they'd say Cerrone is an American and Medeiros is Hawaiian as if it's not a state. I guess what I'm getting at is that be it cause and effort or a self fulfilling prophecy, the poster just reinforces the UFC (and fight fans) belief that Hawaii is the 8th unofficial continent.
2- There are a lot of things Yancy Medeiros does really well that will parlay him toward success in this fight with Cerrone. His kicks when he commits to them tend to be powerful, he mixes up his techniques well, he's unorthodox and willing to try different things and obviously he hits hard and has heavy ground and pound. Like Cerrone, he tends to not let guys off the hook when he has them hurting either (I believe only Francisco Trinaldo has really ever made it through the rough patches with Medeiros). The problem is Yancy's biggest strength also plays into Cerrone's biggest strengths. Medeiros is fantastic at taking the best someone has to offer, recovering from it, regrouping and  getting them back. Against Oliveira and Erick Silva especially, Yancy Medeiros was able to take serious punishment and buckle down en route to the rally stoppage. Against Francisco Trinaldo, he was basically dead in the first round before springing to life and beating the fuck out of Trinaldo in a wild second round to give himself a chance. The problem with being a blood, guts and balls type comeback artist is that it's dependent almost entirely on who is trying to finish you. Donald Cerrone NEVER lets guys off the hook. When he hurts them, he finishes them. When Medeiros has tried that blood and guts style vs more talented guys like Dustin Poirier, he's eaten the short end of the stick. If he gets hurt and tries to play desperation mode, Cerrone probably snatches up his neck.
3- Given his history and given the amount of fights he's had, it is worth wondering whether or not Donald Cerrone is simply cooked as a top level fighter. Even if you believe he beat Robbie Lawler, Cerrone has been hurt in four of his last five fights. He's still an offensive marvel (it wasn't too long ago he uncorked one of the greatest combinations of all time vs Rick Story) but his propensity to freeze up vs body shots and his struggles with straight shots haven't gotten any better. He'll be 35 this year, he's fought top level competition for the better part of the last eight years and he's fighting guys who hit way harder than he's used to when he was active at 155 lbs.
4- I wonder if Medeiros has the style to go five rounds? It's worth pointing out again that Cerrone has been doing five round fights for the better part of eight years.
5- Derrick Lewis vs Marcin Tybura feels like a fight that should be getting more attention than it is. Both are young by HW standards (Lewis just turned 33, Tybura is 30) and both have similar set ups into how they operate. Both are patient, at times overly so, strikers who do their best work with heavy top control and tend to use their size in an attempt to wear down and wear out their opponents. Both are surprisingly athletic guys who are really good kickers especially Marcin Tybura. Both are prisoners of pacing as neither man handles an uptick in tempo well and in the case of Derrick Lewis, it almost feels like a lack of confidence at times. Both are coming off fights where they essentially got checked by the elites of the division and fights where both left questions unanswered about their ceilings in the division.
6- Francis Ngannou vs Derrick Lewis has to happen, doesn't it?
7- The middleweight division takes a lot of knocks for being old and rightfully so but let's shine some light on a nice reverse trend for the 185ers in 2017:
In October; 29 year old Brad Tavares picked up his third straight win in dominating Thales Leites, 27 year old Antonio Carlos Jr picked up his 2nd straight sub win and Thiago Santos while not young at 33, took another step up the ranks by pretty much ruining the life of Jack Marshmann.
In November; 26 year old Paulo Costa ended Johny Hendricks' UFC career with a 1st round TKO, 27 year old kickboxer Karl Roberson made his debut and choked out Darren Stewart, the eternally frustrating but under 30 years old Elias Theodorou decisioned Judo Dad Dan Kelly and 26 year old Kelvin Gastelum presumably ended the career of Michael Bisping to end a December to December stretch with a 3-1 record at middleweight.
In December; 29 year old Gerald Meerschaert continued his Jake Ellenberger-esque career renaissance with a TKO win over Eric Spicely to run his UFC career mark to 3-1, under 30 year old Markus Perez made his UFC debut while 30 year old Eryk Anders took another step forward with his undefeated record in tact, two under 30 Italians (Alessio Dichirico and Marvin Vettori) picked up big wins.
The pattern hasn't quite kept up into 2018. Thus far we've only been greeted to a select few MW fights but the one pattern that's come up is age is conquering all. Jacare, Romero, Thiago Marreta and Machida were older middleweights who picked up wins while guys like Eryk Anders and Anthony Smith (29) suffered set backs. The reason we went through that entire walk on the mild side is that MW Oskar Piechota is back  and he draws Tim Williams in a fight that has me both intrigued and concerned. Piechota showcased some really impressive grappling skills and power in his hands in his UFC debut. He's a former Cage Warriors champion and at a time where "the local draw" is a big deal, a young Polish fighter under 30 could be worth his weight in gold as the UFC aims for expansion. At the same time, it's his first fight outside of Europe and while Tim Williams is not a guy who I would believe to be UFC quality (this is like his third attempt at trying to break through to the other side), this has all the makings of a spoiler fight for an undefeated fighter. LEST we forgot undefeated dudes are really struggling as we head to 2018.
8- If James Vick was a middleweight, would he have fought for the title by now?
9- I wonder if Joby Sanchez has a chance to still compete for the title. Sanchez was probably bought into the UFC a smidge too early and struggled across three fights before ultimately getting released. He lost to Wilson Reis in his debut on short notice, barely got by Tateki Matsuda in a controversial decision win and was beating Geane Herrera before he got dropped and stopped. Since then the Jackson-Wink product has done nothing but win including back to back wins on Dana White's Tuesday Night Contenders. He's back in the house and draws local guy Roberto Sanchez in what should be at the very least an exciting fight. Sanchez is an LFA product who lost his debut.
10- Is this Sage Northcutt vs Thibault Gouti fight an unfair one? I've seen some "soft matchup!" calls on social media but let's be fair and realistic; Sage Northcutt really is on THIS kind of a level. That's not to say Gouti can't win (he's a good striker who can throw some shit together at you) but Sage is bigger, stronger, more athletic and there's no doubt that Gouti is here to be "the opponent" in the fight. Having said all of that, why is this a bad thing? Sage Northcutt isn't ready for the elites of the MMA or even guys above the bottom rung. View Super Sage as a long play and realize that these fights are more about checking off boxes than they are about getting him ready to fight for the title. This fight will test how he reacts to an aggressive guy who throws a lot of kicks in combination. We've seen Sage habitually freeze up in the face of pressure so let's see how he handles it this time.
11- So it IS worth pointing out that Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series has hit a bit of a skid in 2018. 2017 saw them get off to a very hot start when the fighters started to filet in (Allen Crowder was the only original night winner who didn't win his debut fight) but since then it's been a pretty rough patch. Matt Frevola and Brandon Davis both ate losses in their UFC debuts while Dan Ige got plasted (by fellow DWTCS candidate Julio Arce). That doesn't even count Austin Arnett who lost on the Contender Series and then lost again in the UFC. As such I've got my eyes on Geoffrey Neal and Brandon Davis, two guys who won their original night Contender Series fights and got contracts that night. Davis is a big of a weirder situation since he's facing a guy who got signed on short notice in Stephen Petersen out of DWTCS. That said the winners are the guys they wanted and so Davis takes precedent in this instance.
12- Should Josh Burkman still be fighting at this point?
Must Wins
1- Donald Cerrone
I LOVE what Donald Cerrone has brought to the UFC. He's been the model of consistency, the sort of guy who would fight AND win 3-4 times a year. Cerrone has been a UFC road warrior but at this point, you wonder what's left. Pushing 35 off three straight losses at a bigger weight class would lead you to believe that Cerrone's time could potentially be up. Yancy Medeiros is a guy who he is equal to stylistically.
2- Derrick Lewis
This isn't about Lewis having to fight for his job. He signed a new deal, he's very popular, he's normally good for a big finish and he will always keep himself involved. Consider that Nannou is probably the #2 most popular HW currently and the two have been going back and forth. Lewis needs to win to set that fight up in my eyes even if you can still do L vs L. I dont think the UFC wants Ngannou vs Lewis with both guys coming off losses and so Lewis HAS to win.
3- Joby Sanchez
If you've never fought Mighty Mouse, you've got to really REALLY go out there and impress because you could be only two wins away from snatching up a big title fight. What's more, Joby Sanchez has a bit of a ready made story. He got to the UFC too early, got cut and had to work his way back the hard way. He needs to win and win impressively.
Five Can't Miss Fights
1- Donald Cerrone vs Yancy Medeiros
2- Derrick Lewis vs Marcin Tybura
3- Roberto Sanchez vs Joby Sanchez
4- Carlos Diego Ferreira vs Jared Gordon
5- Thiago Alves vs Curtis Millender

Vertigo Comics Series I’ve read in the entirety and some thoughts Part 3
FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics  - I loved this series, and hope that it gets picked up by another comic publisher. I remember it was optioned for TV and I want that too. Great premise, gravity and the physical laws don’t work quite right. This is possibly because of other dimensions, but in the mean time a Bureau is created to deal with (mostly patch up) affected areas. Fun, with intriguing characters.
Hinterkind - Post apocalyptic tale where after a plague, fairy kind come out of hiding and the human survivors have to learn to live together. If you’ve been reading this list and thinking “No Fables, what’s with that?” The truth is, I don’t like Fables, but I really wanted to and therefore feel safe saying that a reason Fables became a hit while Hinterkind didn’t (besides timing) is accessibility. It’s pretty clear from the start what Fables is doing, fairytale characters in the real world. Where the versions of the characters were different than what you remember they’re still close enough to be welcoming. Hinterkind did have that, though it did have a dark rich story filled with surprises that never feels mean. Worth checking out.
Imaginary Fiends - I didn’t realize that this was announced as a miniseries and thought it was suddenly and unceremoniously cancelled like Effigy was. I would like a second arc some time.
iZombie - The comic and tv show don’t have much in common besides the nugget that eating brains allows the zombie to access the brain’s memory. The mythology is much more in the forefront of the comic. It involves different ways that the soul and body interact, not designer drugs and crazy energy drinks. I mostly enjoyed it, but a lot of it wasn’t that memorable. (There was a plot involving vampire sorority girls, and a were-terrier coming out as gay? That all happened right?) An interesting thing about its plot is that a lot of tension was made about the leads memory loss, and how that could only be assuaged by eating the freshest of brains. The TV show and its lead’s love of trying out the personae of the people who’s brains she consumed is kind of the opposite of that.
Last Gang in Town - while struggling to remember the name of this comic, I was reminded of several that I read and liked better. I have little memory of what actually happens in the comic. There was at one point a quote from Penelope Houston and that was enough to make me wish I didn’t hate this. I read it after the 2016 election and I had a very low tolerance for a kind of “burn it all down” attitude that this has. In general, it had the right targets for its wrath, but that’s not the point. The point is it’s hard to know how to choose ones targets and what to do with them.
The Comical Tragedy or Tragical Comedy of Mr Punch - the most I’ve ever liked David McKean as an interior artist. (I’m pretty consistently a fan his covers). One of the most disturbing stories Neil Gaiman ever wrote, and not just because it gives explicit detail on how how a “Punch and Judy” show should work and what it means.
The Names - pretty fun financial thriller that goes in wild directions but also feels like it knows it’s limits. Probably the first place I came across Leandro Fernandez is art, and I am a fan.
New Romancer - a short, crazy father daughter story involving computer programming and Lord Byron. (Get the title?) Peter Milligan at his sweetest. Highly recommend it despite being half as long as it was planned.
Pride of Baghdad - there was an article a couple of years ago about how the forever wars started in the George W Bush administration influenced the writing of Brian K Vaughan. This mini series, inspired by how lions from the Baghdad Zoo escaped after the siege only to later be killed by American soldiers. As heartbreaking as it sounds.
North 40 - I read it because of Fiona Staples’s art.  I didn’t like it. It was confusing and not that intriguing. I don’t remember much.

Song Review: Robbie Robertson feat. Glen Hansard - “Let Love Reign”
Robbie Roberson moves from the brilliant, murder-for-hire musing “I Hear You Paint Houses” to the banal plea for rainbows and unicorns that is the second single from Sinephile.
Musically, “Let Love Reign” is fairly a dance number that could be snuck into a replay of any day of M-TV programming from 1984 and no one would think anything of it. Lyrically, it’s simplistic and corny - exactly the kind of song the world doesn’t need now.
Let love reign, like John Lennon said/let love reign down, for the tears that we shed, the former Band guitarist sings with harmony vocals from Glen Hansard toward the end of the five-minute track.
Unlike its predecessor, “Let Love Reign” fails to grow on the listener. Instead, it starts to grate with repeated spins.
Sinephile, Robertson’s first studio LP in more than seven years, arrives Sept. 20.
